Developing manual dexterity for dentistry
Dentistry requires a multitude of skills, and one of them is manual dexterity. It is also known as fine motor skill, the coordination of small muscles in movement with the eyes, hands, and fingers.
There are many ways to develop and demonstrate it, and you can find one technique that suits you best. Once you practice these more and more, it will eventually assist you in the demonstration of the key skills that you can mention in your personal statement, and interviews:
Learning how to play an instrument
Whether it be guitar, piano, violin, or even the flute, an instrument will develop your fine motor skills as it requires precise finger placement and coordination of several movements in unison.
Knitting / crocheting
If you’re interested in making your projects, this is a fun way to develop your manual dexterity. Plenty of tutorials on YouTube are available to self-teach yourself.
Baking & cooking
Precision in baking is vital, and a steady hand is needed to measure ingredients. As a bonus, you have something delicious to reward yourself with at the end.
Nail art
Practice on yourself, fake nails, or your friends - this is a creative alternative to painting as it forces intricacy on a smaller canvas.
Soap - Carving
The harder the soap is, the more difficult it will be to cut, forcing your hands to do additional work
Drawing
Engaging in artistic activities such as painting or drawing can help improve manual dexterity by requiring controlled hand movements and coordination.
